Achieve the Ultimate Summer Glow with Advice by Dr.G!

Achieve the Ultimate Summer Glow with Advice by Dr.G!

In the summer time, it's tempting to walk outside with nothing on but a crop top and some cut off shorts. However, before you hit the streets, make sure your skin is well-protected from the sun's rays.

Today, we got a chance to speak with Dr.G, a medical doctor and makeup artist, about ways we can achieve a summer glow while protecting our skin.

Also, read below what the doctor had to say about our Brunch Obsession!

Q: Dr. G, you know we at Fashionpowwow.com love us some brunch. Are there things from a typical brunch menu we should eliminate if we want to obtain a glowing skin?
A: Brunch is one of my favorite meals. With that said, there is no food on the brunch menu you should avoid unless you have an allergy or aversion to it. If you're a smoker, I recommend ditching the post-brunch puff, as smoking helps to dull skin and promote premature aging.

Q: Is it still recommended to drink 8 glasses of mimosa, I mean water a day if we want to see a meaningful change in our skin?
A: Lol, yes! 8 glasses per day is the recommended water intake

Q: Are there foods we can eliminate from our diets that can lessen our chance of acne breakouts?
A: Absolutely! Several foods can cause acne, but here are a few: cakes, sugary drinks, pastries, and chocolate can cause inflammation and breakouts due to their high sugar content. Dairy products (that's right cheese lovers) contain lots of hormones either natural or added, and that can lead to excess sebum thereby clogging pores and eventually leading to acne and breakouts. Lastly, greasy fast food. These are high in trans fats which cause inflammation, leading to acne. I rarely recommend eliminating things from your diet, but I'd say, as with most foods- everything in moderation. :)

Q: What are some affordable, good moisturizers that are on the market?
A: My top favs: Aveeno positively radiance daily moisturizer, Mario BADESCU oil free moisturizer, and Cetaphil oil control moisturizer. For a bit more money, Kiel's crem de elegance or PCA skin Rebalance provides just the right amount of moisture for morning and night.

Q: Should we have a moisturizer for the daytime and another one for the night time?
A: That's a tossup. I typically say no. Just make sure you're incorporating a retinol into your night time routine and a sunscreen into your daytime routine. You can keep the same moisturizer for the day and night time.

Q: Are there particular skin regimens for people who are dark skin vs. those who are light skin?
A: Not really. I prefer to create regimens based on skin type (acne prone vs. sensitive vs. aging vs. discoloration) The most important thing about a skincare regimen is consistency.

Q: Dr.G, can you recommend a great sunscreen lotion?

A: Of course! Sunscreen is non-negotiable when it comes to a skincare regimen. It reduces premature aging, skin cancer risk, and appearance of dark spots. The following sunscreens appear seamless under foundation and are recommended for dark skin tones (because they don't leave a purple hue): MURAD Invisiblur Perfecting Shield SPF 30. It has avobenzone, which protects the skin against wrinkle-causing UVA rays(It glides on smoothly for a matte finish); Palmers' Cocoa Butter Formula Even Tone Suncare Sunscreen Stick SPF 50; Cover FX Clear Cover Invisible Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50; and PCA SKIN Weightless Protection Broad Spectrum SPF 45.

Q: If we want to wear minimal makeup, what's a great balance? Do we eliminate a concealer or blush and just do our eyebrows and put on some lip gloss?
A: If your goal is to wear minimal makeup, start with skincare. Adhere to a regimen: Do weekly masks, exfoliate twice a week, wear daily sunscreen, apply a retinol at night, and remain patient. After weeks of a consistent regimen and TLC, your skin will appear more radiant and youthful, and that is when you will not reach for so much makeup.

Q: Any closing words for our readers?
A: Beautiful skin doesn't take a miracle, it takes a routine.
